Nachdenken übers Bloggen

Blogging from the BalconyWell, i’ve hit the seven month “blogging-about-chemistry”-slump, meaning I was seriously thinking about where to go with this blog, or wether to go on at all.
Not blogging isn’t really an option for me, at all. Blogging is like inviting someone for a cup of tea into your living room. You chat for a while and then go on. I enjoy the interaction with other bloggers and commenters.
But that still leaves a lot to think about concerning subject to be blogged about. While I will never be a “today-I-did-this”-kind of blogger I am interessted in more than just chemistry. I have recently renewed my interesst in politics, I like art and crafts and really a lot of things. I write about these things too, but I have nowhere to put them.
So I thought about starting a second blog to blog about all the other stuff. This would be neat. Scientists like neat, but usually life isn’t. So what would I do if a subject fit into more than one blog? I’m not even mentioning the hassle of keeping track of two blogs at the same time. It would help me get back to the original aim of this blog, giving non-chemists insight into chemistry.
Then I picked up a book that was lying around on my shelf for quite some time now: The Same and not the Same, by Nobel Prize winner Roald Hoffman. In the cover text it says:
… An accomplished poet and writer, he is the author of many books and articles on topics in chemistry, as well as Chemistry imagined- a book about art, science and literature
I had an epiphany! Not really, but it does show that a chemist doesn’t have to be singlemindedly thinking about chemistry. And this is something I want to convey about us, too. So really this leaves me with the best excuse to write about whatever I want to. Expect more chemistry. I want this to be a place my students could go and find the information they need, to at least pass their course. I also want to talk more of stuff in literature. But also be prepared to hear more on my views of politics, art and science in general.
One other thing I had to think about. How important do I want blogging to be in my life? That isn’t so easy to figure out. I tend to pressure myself to write something everday, this is too much, if I want to write quality. So I will reduce the amount of articles I write in favor of quality. If I post no more than once a week, so be it. There will be times when I will write more again. Also writing is becoming easier with practice. We’ll see how things develop.

Blogging should never be a pressure or an “I have to”. Generally I tend to like blogs more when they cover more than just one topic so I am looking forward to your new way of blogging. *hugs*

Yeah, I struggled with that one too. I didn’t want to write just about chemistry, particularly not about my specific research. I end up writing less chemistry than I’d like, more postdoc stuff than I want to, less women in science stuff than I’d like. I struggle constantly with ideas of what my content should be. Stuff in the lab in general seems to be a good general theme for me at the moment.
Good luck with the blogging, don’t stop because I’d miss you. I think you are right though, about art and politics as well as chemistry. It proves that scientist-grad student-chemists are more than just chemists. That’s important for non-chemists.
